Welcome to Staccato Thoughts
A space to collect musings and to archive this unique time in my life -
my very first work gap
About me:
28 (turning 29 this year!) female
At the border of millenial vs Gen Z but my old soul relates much more to millenials (and low socks)
Decided to press pause after 5.5 years of working
I’ll be taking this time to travel, read, also to sit and be still. Ultimately, the main aim of this period is to learn to be present, and for self discovery: What decisions will I make when they are no longer any set expectations or things that I need to do? How will I feel about certain items or activities, when there is no one else influencing it other than myself?
I see many more people leaving their jobs on breaks at this stage which I think is extremely exciting! and meaningful not just for personal growth but for professional reasons as well. For my own sector: working in sustainability requires a broad view across countries and sectors, and such a perspective can’t always be developed by sitting behind the desk in a city.
Taking a gap still isn’t the most common in SG tho (together with solo travel), so jotting some notes and thoughts here in case it may be relevant to anyone who is considering either. Come along on this journey with me as I try to explore and learn a little more about myself and the world. P.s. 5 months in, and am still happy with the decision!
