Learning to cook

In Singapore, convenience culture is dominant. I never really cooked (does maggie count?) and most of my meals were takeaways from stalls outside. BUT travel has reminded me about the importance of food!

It is always interesting to see how things are made from scratch - e.g. soy sauce or chilli which in SG we would typically just buy from a supermarket. And even though there is chilli in so many parts of the world, the type of chilli differs greatly - from the tanginess in salsa picante, to the taste of shrimp paste in our local sambal. I also found myself finding joy in being able to buy things from the source back for my family and friends e.g. blackberries from Xinjiang or coffee from Colombia.

There are certain dishes and flavours that I did indeed start to miss when travelling (although I would say travelling in LATAM is a lot easier than travelling in Europe foodwise for Asians haha) - I mostly missed things like soup and tofu, particularly when I fell sick overseas.

I’m also looking to learn from my mum how to cook simple things that she’s been preparing since we were young - familiar flavors with tips that you can’t find from blogs and tiktoks online.

Slowly learning! Very baby steps of someone who wants quick tricks and can’t cook ~
